Ten Reasons to be Against Gay Marriage

This is a much heated debate in our contemporary society. Some states such as Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Iowa and Maine have legalized same sex marriage. Legislatures in many other countries and states continue to be lobbied by gay rights activists to legalize homosexual marriage.

Here are ten reasons to be against gay marriage:

  1. It would undermine the core institution of marriage. Marriage is defined by many countries and religions as the union of a “man and a woman”. It has been for centuries. To change its definition and ingrained status in society would mean to devalue the importance of marriage itself. This is the top reason to be against gay marriage.
  2. Many religions regard gay and lesbian relationships as a sin. Since the beginning, God’s primary vehicle for evangelism has been the family. It would drastically curtail the spread of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
  3. It would open the floodgates for relaxing the institution of marriage to include things like polygamy and polyandry.
  4. Family and traditional societal values would be weakened. Society already has enough problems with deteriorating, fractured and dysfunctional family unions.
  5. Children would be imbued to regard homosexuality and gay marriage with the same moral and societal standing as heterosexuality and marriage. Parents will be made to affirm homosexuality in their children. What about their text books and teachings at school?
  6. Negative financial consequences in terms of increased taxes to provide for the financial and taxation benefits given to married couples.
  7. Decrease in social security benefits to make up for survivor support being paid to homosexual widows.
  8. Increased pressure on the medical system to cater for diseases connected with homosexual activities such as colon cancer, AIDs and hepatitis.
  9. Unfair and possibly harmful adoption decisions, with priority possibly being given to gay married couples since they are unable to procreate. A judge will not be able to favor traditional married couples over fatherless or motherless units.
  10. Being raised both by mother and a father is important for children’s emotional wellbeing.

These ten reasons to be against gay marriage show why the topic is so controversial. It clearly demonstrates so many people oppose the move.
